Sri Lankan Cricketer Jayawickrama charged of Anti-corruption

Sri Lankan Cricketer Jayawickrama charged with breaking Anti-Corruption Code. 

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged a 25 year old Sri Lankan spinner Jayawickrama of violating anti-corruption laws. He has been charged with a number of allegations and the changes are related to both international matches and the Lanka Premier League 2021. 

These breaches include:

-Article 2.4.4-  Failing to report match fixing approaches to the Anti Corruption Unit, without unnecessary details of an approach he received to carry out fixing in future International Matches..

-Article 2.4.4-  Failing to report to the Anti Corruption Unit, no reporting request to involve others. The cricketer is also accused of not reporting a request where he was asked to involve another player to engage in match-fixing during the 2021 LPL.   

-Article 2.4.7-  Obstructing investigation: Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which the approaches and offers to engage in corrupt conduct were made.

The player/ cricketer has 14 days, until August 20 to respond to these charges. The ICC is accusing him of breaching rules for both International and LPL related misconduct. 

Who is Jayawickrama?

Jayawickrama is a Sri Lankan player known for practicing spin bowling. He debuted in May 2021. Jayawickrama had played five matches each in Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty 20 International (T20) formats. He played his last match in June 2022 against Australia in T20 format. He was also a part of Sri Lanka’s squad who won Asia Cup in 2022 but did not get the chance to get on the field.
